The magnetron or a high-voltage diode has likely failed. This is the core heating component, and on countertop units it's often not economical to replace.
Door won't close properly, or unit won't start
A door switch (interlock) has failed — a safety feature that stops the microwave running with the door open, and it fails in the closed position too when worn.
Sparking inside the cavity
Usually metal debris or a damaged wave guide cover. Stop using the unit immediately and have it checked before running it again.
Control panel unresponsive
A failed touchpad or control board, common on units past six or seven years old.

Often not, once the magnetron has failed — a new countertop unit frequently costs less than that single part and the labour to fit it. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line yours falls on.
What about a built-in or over-the-range model?
Those are usually worth repairing, since replacement means matching cabinet cutouts and venting, which adds real cost beyond the appliance itself.
Why did it suddenly stop heating with no warning?
Magnetrons tend to fail outright rather than gradually weaken, so a sudden full stop in heating with everything else working normally points straight at it.
