Gas and electric dryers share one truth: airflow problems cause more service calls than broken parts. Before we open the cabinet, we check whether the machine is actually the problem or whether the vent run is the real culprit.
Signs it's time to call
The four complaints we hear most often about this appliance, and what each one usually means.
Takes two or three cycles for one load
Almost always restricted airflow — a lint-choked vent run, a crushed flexible duct behind the machine, or (less often) a failing heating element. See signs your vent needs cleaning before assuming a part has failed.
Drum turns but no heat at all
On gas models, often the igniter or gas valve solenoid. On electric, a blown thermal fuse or failed heating element. Either way, safe to keep using for tumbling but not for drying.
Burning smell on startup
Usually lint that has built up on the heating element or around the drum seal. Worth stopping use until checked — this is the more common precursor to dryer fires.
Squealing or grinding as the drum turns
Drum support rollers or the drum belt tensioner wearing out. Gets louder over weeks, not something that appears and disappears on its own.

How often should the vent actually be cleaned?
Once a year for most households, sooner if the run is long, has multiple bends, or terminates through a roof rather than a wall — all of which trap lint faster.
Is a burning smell always urgent?
Treat it as urgent. A smell that persists after clearing the lint trap warrants stopping the dryer and having it looked at before running it again.
Gas or electric — does it change repair cost much?
Gas dryers add ignition components to check, which can mean a slightly longer diagnostic, but most common failures cost about the same to fix either way.
