Food thawing at the top, solid at the bottom
An airflow problem, usually a fan that has iced over or stopped turning. Chest freezers with no fan can show this if the thermostat has drifted.
Loud clicking, then silence
The compressor's start relay trying and failing to kick the motor over. It's a small part, but ignoring it eventually takes the compressor with it.

Is a chest freezer worth repairing over an upright?
